Kaizer Chiefs Coach Johnson Opts for Mamelodi Sundowns Pair as Top PSL Player of the Season Contenders
Johnson, a respected figure in South African football, asserts that both Mokoena and Williams displayed remarkable performances throughout the season, surpassing the likes of Maswanganyi and Stellenbosch’s Iqraam Rayners.
The coach highlights the outstanding contributions of the Sundowns players not only in the local league but also on the continental stage, particularly in the African Football League and the Caf Champions League.
He emphasizes Mokoena and Williams’ involvement in Sundowns’ recent success, including clinching the PSL title and reaching the final of the Nedbank Cup. Sundowns also made a significant impact in the Caf Champions League, reaching the semi-finals, before bowing out to Esperance de Tunis.
Johnson believes that Sundowns’ achievements in both domestic and international competitions strengthen the candidacy of Mokoena and Williams for the Player of the Season award.
The final decision on the Player of the Season will be made during the end-of-season PSL awards ceremony, where Johnson will join a panel of judges consisting of the other 15 PSL coaches.
As Mokoena and Williams await the outcome of the award, they remain focused on the upcoming Nedbank Cup final against Maswanganyi’s Orlando Pirates. Additionally, they aim to secure spots in the national team for the upcoming Fifa World Cup qualifiers against Zimbabwe and Nigeria, building on their success as bronze medalists in the 2023 Afcon tournament.
