Report: A new yet experienced tight ends coach has been hired by Michigan football
Over the last two months, Michigan has had numerous personnel changes, but one more piece of the puzzle has been secured. The Wolverines have appointed Steve Casula, a former UMass offensive coordinator, as the tight ends coach, according to Josh Henschke of the Maize & Blue Review.
Michigan has a candidate for the tight-end coaching job who is well-known to the U-M student body.
Steve Casula, the offensive coordinator for UMass, is set to become the TE coach in Ann Arbor, according to multiple sources.
Casula worked as an analyst at Michigan from 2019 to 2021, when he was hired as the offensive coordinator at the University of Massachusetts by Don Brown, the former defensive coordinator at Michigan.
The impressive offensive comeback at UMass was led by Casula. In 2022, Casula’s rookie season, the Minutemen managed just 12.8 points and 265 yards per game. They had only won one game, making them the worst college football team in existence.
However, Casula was able to lead a productive team after he became comfortable in his new position. Casula’s offense increased to 28 points and 356 yards per game in 2023. Umass only managed three wins, but Casula and his team scored twenty-four points or more in five of the team’s defeats.
Casula will join Michigan to carry on a successful tradition, as the state already has a strong, tight endroom. Priority one will be to keep Colston Loveland involved, as he may be the best at his position in college football going into the upcoming season.
But Loveland has some fascinating young people behind it. Potential is present in rising sophomores Deakon Tonielli and Zack Marshall, while top players in the country are regarded for incoming freshmen Brady Prieskorn and Hogan Hansen. To put it briefly, Casula should not be shaping players who are below average into NFL prospects; instead, he should just supervise the excellent operations of a team that is already excellent.
Although the actual makeup of the offense for next season is unknown, Loveland is almost certainly going to be the primary receiving option. For someone so young, his talent and athleticism are exceptional. Should he file to be selected in the 2025 NFL draft, expect him to be among the first players chosen.
