Chiefs Win Two Straight Super Bowls Under the Leadership Of Former Texas Rangers Pitcher’s Son
The son of the legendary Texas Rangers reliever has now surpassed his father’s baseball achievements even more after leading the Kansas City Chiefs to victory over the San Francisco 49ers in overtime of Super Bowl LVIII on Sunday, 25-22, in Las Vegas.
With two touchdowns, 333 yards, and one interception, Mahomes was the quarterback. In the last two minutes of regulation, he guided the Chiefs to a game-tying field goal. On their opening drive in overtime, they scored the winning touchdown.
In the first overtime, Mahomes won the game with a touchdown pass to Mecole Hardman with three seconds remaining. The Chiefs are the first team since the 2004 New England Patriots to win back-to-back Super Bowls.
After graduating from Lindale High School in 1988, Mahomes Sr., a native of Lindale, Texas, was selected in the sixth round by the NFL. In the end, he made his major league debut with the Minnesota Twins in 1992. Prior to the 2001 season, he arrived in Texas as a free agent.
In 56 appearances (four starts) over 107 innings with the Rangers, he went 7-6 with a 5.70 ERA, his highest season total since 1994 when he tossed 120 innings with Minnesota.
Mahomes left baseball two years later, in 2003, following his final season with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Now, as a starting quarterback, his son is the fifth quarterback in history to win at least three Super Bowl championships.
In addition to becoming the 2020 Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year, Mahomes II is a six-time Pro Bowl selection, two-time NFL MVP, NFL Offensive Player of the Year, and two-time First Team All-Pro selection. In the regular season, he has already completed 28,424 yards of passing with 219 touchdowns and 63 interceptions.
