According to reports, Man City will go on trial in the fall of 2019; the verdict might not be known until as late as 2025.We already talked about how the sheer number of reported violations would undoubtedly require a drawn-out procedure.
I have argued that it is contradictory to think that Arsenal should win the league while picking Man City to win it. But when City is removed from the equation, that expectation abruptly becomes much more reasonable.
It would be interesting to see who might leave City if they were to lose. Would the winners be able to retain their best players, and would they stick around for the one or two campaigns that you would anticipate in the second tier?
Is it possible that Arsenal will try to sign some of the young players who are seeking a fast track back to the Premier League? Given the uncertainty and the fact that players are bound by contracts, it would be reasonable for the club to refuse any departures.
Though Arsenal could promise them both Premier League football and a steady title challenge, they could also gain from beating City to any transfer targets they may have had at the time. It has never been thought about how Man City would bounce back from losing to the Championship, so that could give the Gunners an advantage.
Finally, Pep Guardiola’s contract expires in 2025, and it would be challenging to see the Spaniard stay on given the possibility of relegation. Apart from the high caliber of players and significant capital invested, Guardiola is primarily responsible for City’s success, having taken the team above the many head coaches who had been there before.
It would be interesting to see Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal play a City team searching for a new manager, even if they were to return to the Premier League right away. The only issue, I guess, would be if City approached Arteta directly about the role.
The Premier League is about to experience a turning point in its history. The goal is for Arsenal to emerge from it with the greatest possible short- and long-term advantage.
