MLB Exec: Marlins ‘Entire Team is Up for Grabs’ After Luis Arráez Trade to Padres
The Marlins’ trade of Arráez to the Padres, which netted them first baseman Nathan Martorella, outfielders Dillon Head and Jakob Marsee, and right-hander Woo-Suk Go, appears to be just the beginning of what could be a significant overhaul for Miami. Struggling at the bottom of the NL East with a dismal 10-29 record, the Marlins seem poised to make substantial changes.
Heyman highlighted starting pitcher Jesus Luzardo and closer Tanner Scott as potential trade targets from Miami’s roster. Luzardo has struggled with a 6.58 ERA in five starts this season, while Scott boasts a 2.57 ERA with four saves in 15 appearances.
Additionally, Heyman suggested that Josh Bell and Jake Burger could be on the trading block. Bell has posted a .201 batting average with four home runs and 13 RBI, while Burger has three homers, 15 RBI, and a .203 batting average.
Although the Marlins parted ways with Arráez, they received a promising return in the form of solid prospects. Head and Marsee were ranked as the Padres’ No. 6 and No. 7 prospects, respectively, in Bleacher Report’s farm system rankings, with Martorella listed as the team’s No. 9 prospect.
By trading current veterans for talented prospects, the Marlins seem intent on building for the future. Since their World Series victory in 2003, Miami has struggled to find sustained success in the postseason, making the playoffs just twice and failing to advance past the divisional series. With little hope for a postseason run this year given their rough start, leveraging the trade market to bolster their future prospects appears to be the prudent path forward for the Marlins.
