MLB Insider: Texas Rangers Will Sign a Highly-Sought-After Starting Pitcher
Fans of the Texas Rangers want Jordan Montgomery, a left-handed starter, to return. Montgomery appears to be wanted back by the Texas Rangers front management.Montgomery is so eager to return to Arlington that Hurtado BBQ is even offering him free BBQ for the rest of his life.
Montgomery is still unsigned, though. After his brief tenure with the Rangers, where he established himself as one of their top starts and helped secure multiple significant postseason victories, including Game 7 of the American League Championship Series in Nathan Eovaldi’s place, the 30-year-old free agent should have no shortage of suitors.
It appears like Montgomery and other unrestricted free agents like Blake Snell and Shota Imanaga will soon have to close deals. Teams aim to have every player on the roster, if at all feasible, when pitchers and catchers report in five weeks. What will become of Monty, then?
For the remainder of Spring Training, USA Today expert Bob Nightengale offered his ten predictions on Sunday. This included where a number of free agents were going. Montgomery was one.
Although Montgomery finished 10-11 overall, his 2023 season ended up being his best overall. With a 3.20 ERA, he walked 48 and struck out 166 batters. He finished 4-2 with a 2.79 ERA in his time with the Rangers, where his numbers improved.
He improved further in the postseason. Montgomery had a 3.90 ERA and went 3-1. That served as the ideal springboard to ultimately land a contract with lots of zeroes. Many predict he will land a deal close to $100 million.
But will he return to Texas in the end? According to Nightengale:
The Texas Rangers will re-sign Jordan Montgomery because they have been hesitant to spend due to the uncertainties surrounding their TV contract. He’s just too valuable to not bring back for a second encore.
Montgomery would want to remain in Texas, according to Nightengale, even though the Yankees are interested in him.
