Report: MLS veteran Dax McCarty is almost signed by Atlanta United.
Atlanta United is reportedly close to signing seasoned midfielder Dax McCarty, a two-time Supporters’ Shield champion, according to a report from Tom Bogert of The Athletic.
McCarty, 36, has played for five different teams over his lengthy MLS career, totaling over 466 matches. Before becoming a free agent at the end of 2023, he played 121 games for the Coyotes throughout his most recent four years as the first captain of Nashville SC.
McCarty played for the New York Red Bulls for the longest time, from 2011 to 2016, during which time he made 198 appearances and took home Supporters’ Shields in 2013 and 2015.
McCarty made his debut for the US senior national team in 2009 and has since accrued 13 caps. In 2017, the team won the Gold Cup.
Since Ozzie Alonso’s contract expired at the end of the previous season, McCarty will now play the role of seasoned leader in the middle of the field. Although the specifics of his contract are yet unknown, it is safe to infer that he will accept a senior minimum wage or a comparable salary in exchange for joining the Five Stripes.
