Jayson Tatum reportedly signs the biggest contract in NBA history with the Boston Celtics.
According to Charania, Tatum and the Celtics have reached an agreement on a $314 million, five-year supermax deal extension that will last through the 2029–2030 campaign. CNN contacted Tatum’s agency and the Celtics, but received no response right away.
The 26-year-old, who averaged 22.2 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 7.2 assists last month, helped the Celtics win an NBA record 18th championship in team history after defeating the Dallas Mavericks in five games. He did so with co-star Jaylen Brown.
In the process of becoming the Seattle Storm the most valuable WNBA team ever, Tatum’s deal eclipses Brown’s one from the previous season as the largest in league history. Brown and the Celtics reached an agreement to extend their $304 million supermax contract for five years in 2023.
Every player in the Celtics starting lineup is now guaranteed a contract through at least the 2025–26 campaign, according to ESPN.
Tatum, a 2017 third-round pick, has been selected to the All-Star team five times and the NBA All-Star team four times. In the upcoming weeks, he will compete for a second Olympic gold medal in Paris as a member of the highly accomplished US men’s team that has won four straight titles.
A few weeks after winning their 18th title, the Celtics revealed on Monday that Wyc Grousbeck, the organization’s owner group, is listing the team for sale.
The Celtics said in a statement that they want to close the remaining amount in 2028 after selling the majority of their stake either this year or early next year.
Governor Grousbeck, who oversaw the team’s 2002 acquisition, will hold the position until the second close in 2028.Forbes reports that the franchise’s October valuation was $4.7 billion.
