Liverpool now have four fully fit center-backs: captain Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Joe Gomez, and Jarell Quansah. In a press conference ahead of his team’s match against Crystal Palace on Saturday, Klopp downplayed the club’s chances of bringing in a new defender this winter.
“In eight years I’ve never understood this, you always talk about transfers as if it would be the easiest thing in the world,” he was quoted as saying. “So find a player, find the money for it – as if we have unlimited funds – I really don’t get it.” Everyone; [the media], fans, and everyone else.
“They’re all expensive, so it has to be the right player.” Can you recommend a club that is looking to sell a top-tier center-back? Not just any centre-back, but a top centre-back who must play for Liverpool. So, why should we begin this process?”We’ve known for four or five days that Joel will be out for an extended period of time, which is disastrous for us. We still have four centre-backs, which is perfectly fine.
“It would have been a completely different team dynamic if we had already had a fifth center-back in place. So it was perfect, and it is still perfect as long as we stick with this four. If not, the number of games coming up will make things more difficult.
“However, it was never a magical land where you could bring in one world-class center-back until the other was fit again.” So long as other clubs don’t put them under the Christmas tree for us and say, ‘Take it and use it for as long as you need it’… I haven’t given it much thought, but I don’t think [we’ll sign anyone].”
Matip’s season-ending injury is a huge blow for the Reds, who are closing in on Arsenal with 34 points, just two behind the league leaders. The 32-year-old will have surgery after being forced off in the second half of Liverpool’s thrilling 4-3 victory over Fulham last weekend.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp takes issue with a broadcaster’s remark about Premier League kick-off times at 12.30 p.m.
Klopp has since stated that he expects the club to offer the long-serving defender a new contract.”Yeah, I’m pretty sure the club will show their class, as you should do it,” he went on to say.”I’m pretty sure the club told Joel already that, whatever happens, as long as he is injured everything is fine.”
