NFL sack leader T.J. Watt is injured in his knee and leaves the game.
Watt left the game in the third quarter due to a knee injury sustained when teammate Montravius Adams tackled him while he was in the air during a passing play.
The play is being staged here. After his brother J.J. Watt, Mark Gastineau, and DeMarcus Ware, Watt becomes just the fourth player in league history to record at least 19 sacks in a season since the statistic was originally tracked.
Even though they are still in the postseason hunt, this is a devastating setback for the Steelers. If they do manage to get in, Watt will be crucial to their chances of making a deep playoff run. He is the most influential and crucial member of the team, and he is also the best player on the team. The Steelers’ record without Watt since entering the NFL is 1-10, while their record with him on the field is 68-33-2.
Two starting middle linebackers (Cole Holcomb and Kwon Alexander) and a number of top safeties (Minkah Fitzpatrick and Keanu Neal, while Damontae Kazee is serving a suspension) are already out with serious injuries for the Steelers’ defense. Adding Watt to that list is crucial.
