Yankees Ace Named All-MLB First Team Pitcher
Aaron Judge, an outfielder, was chosen for the All-MLB Second Team later in the evening. Zac Gallen of Arizona, Blake Snell of San Diego, Spender Strider of Atlanta, and Shohei Ohtani of the Los Angeles Angels who signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers earlier this week were also on Cole’s first team.
In 2023, Cole made 33 starts and finished 15-4 with a 2.63 ERA, which led the American League. For the second consecutive season, he made 33 starts.
After pitching 209 innings, he gave up 20 home runs, 64 runs (61 earned), and 157 hits. In 48 walks, he struck out 222 batters. In the end, he gave up hitters to bat.206 against him and had a 0.81 WHIP. Cole held hitters below a.210 average for the second consecutive season.
For the first time in his career, Cole was named the American League Cy Young winner earlier this offseason. Kevin Gausman of Toronto and Sonny Gray of Minnesota, who were both named to the All-MLB Second Team on Friday, were defeated by him.
Cole nearly won the Cy Young Award twice. After going 20-5 with a 2.50 ERA in 2019 while pitching for Houston, he came in second in the voting. With the Yankees in 2021, he finished second once more while registering an AL-high 16 wins (16-8) and a 3.23 ERA. Three other times, he placed among the Top 5 in the Cy Young voting. He has twice led the AL in ERA and is a six-time All-Star.
