Transfer Losses: Ty Thompson
NFL Declarations: Bo Nix
Analysis: After acquiring Dante Moore and Dillon Gabriel, two of the top quarterbacks available this season, the Ducks clearly don’t need any more quarterbacks via the transfer portal. The Ducks’ QB position should be secure for years to come with the acquisitions made this year.
Running Back
Transfer Additions: Jay Harris
Transfer Losses: Dante Dowdell
NFL Declarations: Bucky Irving
Analysis: Even with the exits of Dante Dowdell and Bucky Irving, the Ducks no longer require a running back with the arrival of Jay Harris and the return of Noah Whittington.
Wide Receiver
Transfer Additions: Evan Stewart
Transfer Losses: Kris Hutson, Ashton Cozart, and Josh Delgado
NFL Declarations: Troy Franklin
Analysis: This previous week, the Ducks experienced a little need at wide receiver (WR), which they expertly remedied by recruiting Evan Stewart, the top receiver according to the site. The Ducks’ wide receiver group appears to be as talented as it has been in a long time, despite Troy Franklin’s departure to the NFL.
Tight End
Transfer Additions: None
Transfer Losses: Casey Kelly
NFL Declarations: None
Analysis: The Ducks lost Casey Kelly to the portal, but they now don’t need anyone from the portal at TE thanks to Terrance Ferguson and Patrick Herbert’s confirmed returns.
Offensive Line
Transfer Additions: Matthew Bedford
Transfer Losses: None
NFL Declarations: Jackson Powers-Johnson, Steven Jones, and Junior Angilau
Analysis: Oregon’s offensive line appears to be well-established in terms of starting skill and depth on the roster, with three of their five starters from the previous year returning, along with the addition of Matthew Bedford from Indiana. This does not require a transfer portal.
Interior Defensive Line
Transfer Additions: JaโMaree Caldwell
Transfer Losses: Tevita Pomeโe
NFL Declarations: Brandon Dorlus, Taki Taimani, Casey Rogers, and Popo Auamavae
Analysis: Aside from this past week, I thought the interior defensive line had the most need for a gateway. The No. 2 DL in the gateway, Ja’Maree Caldwell, was added by the Ducks, giving them an experienced leader over a very bright and deep collection of young players. It is by no means a “need,” but I would suggest that they may yet recruit another seasoned player if the proper one becomes available in the portal.
Linebacker
Transfer Additions: None
Transfer Losses: None
NFL Declarations: Jamal Hill
Analysis: At this point, neither one was added nor lost by the Ducks due to the gateway. However, with the return of both Jeffrey Bassa and Jestin Jacobs, Oregonโs LB group is formidable moving into 2024. Similar to the DL, I believe they might still add someone in the future if the appropriate opportunity presented themselves, but it’s by no means necessary.
Cornerback
Transfer Additions: Kam Alexander
Transfer Losses: Trikweze Bridges
NFL Declarations: Khyree Jackson
Analysis: The addition of UTSA CB Kam Alexander through the portal by the Ducks was a wonderful way to replace Khyree Jackson, and there’s a good possibility they’ll also get former Washington CB Jabbar Muhammad. They are deep and skilled at the position right now, but you don’t say no to an All-Pac-12 player like Muhammad who wants to be a part of your squad. Apart than that, though, CB is absolutely not in need of anything.
Safety
Transfer Additions: Kobe Savage
Transfer Losses: Cole Martin, Daymon David, Bryan Addison
NFL Declarations: Evan Williams, and Steve Stephens IV
Analysis: It’s not an urgent need, but this is the one job where I believe Oregon could use an addition. The addition of Kansas State’s Kobe Savage was a major coup, and program members I’ve spoken with think that freshman Aaron Flowers has the potential to make an immediate impression and contribute. If the proper guy becomes available, I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Ducks sign another safety this summer.
Kicker
Transfer Additions: Atticus Sappington
Transfer Losses: None
NFL Declarations: Camden Lewis
Analysis: The Ducks added Atticus Sappington from Oregon State in lieu of Camden Lewis, who is expected to head a skilled group of kickers and earn the starting job. I don’t think this group needs any additional members.
Analysis
As you can see, the Ducks are currently in a relatively good situation in terms of roster requirements. They don’t currently have any pressing needs, but rather find themselves in a situation where they can add someone to their squad if it makes sense, without having to look for upgrades at any one position.
It is definitely preferable to be in that position before spring ball even begins and the second transfer portal window opens, as it enables you to concentrate on your squad and acquire players only when they make sense. To put it briefly, the Ducks are now in a great position to assemble their squad for 2024.
