Red Sox reportedly on the verge of hiring a former Phillies pitcher.
Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports that former Philadelphia Phillies bullpen pitcher Andrew Bailey is nearing completion of a contract to take over as pitching coach of the Boston Red Sox.Bailey, 39, appears to be joining the Red Sox after it was revealed that the New York Yankees had interviewed him to be their bench coach.
Bailey has been the pitching coach for the San Francisco Giants for the past four seasons. The Baltimore Orioles were reportedly interested in signing the former big leaguer as their pitching coach, in addition to the Yankees’ interest in him. In the carousel, Bailey was one of the most sought-after coaching names.
This is the ideal time for Boston, who need to make significant changes to their pitching staff. The Red Sox collectively had an ERA of 4.52, which was in the bottom ten for the previous season.
after spending the first two seasons of his Major League Baseball career as an All-Star and taking home the Rookie of the Year honor. In 83 1/3 innings during his rookie season, he recorded a 1.84 ERA. Bailey bounced back after an outstanding rookie season with a 1.47 ERA in 49 innings.
After those seasons, the budding talent had some difficulties. In 2015, Bailey had first signed a minor league contract with the Phillies and lasted less than a season with them as he was released in August of 2016.
The Red Sox are anticipated to add a couple arms this winter, despite the fact that they currently have a thin rotation. It will now be Bailey’s responsibility to force them to perform.
