Chiefs’ attempt to hire an emergency coach for the postseason is being thwarted. Gridiron Heroics, a story by Jordan Sigler
The Kansas City Chiefs are unable to bring Eric Bieniemy on board in time for the postseason thanks to the Washington Commanders. This week, the Chiefs will take on the Miami Dolphins in the wild-card round.
There are no playoffs games for the Commanders to play. After a 4-13 season in 2023, the Commanders sacked head coach Ron Rivera on Monday morning. When Rivera was dismissed, there was some anticipation among the Chiefs fan base that they may acquire Eric Bieniemy, the former offensive coordinator for Kansas City.
An offensive spark is what the Kansas City Chiefs need. Under offensive coordinator Matt Nagy, the Chiefs offense has had difficulty this season. Mike Florio of NBC Sports suggested in December that Bieniemy may join the Chiefs for the postseason.
After Bieniemy gets released from his position as offensive coordinator in Washington, Mike Florio of NBC Sports believes the Chiefs might make a real impact by bringing him in for the playoffs. Recent comments from Patrick Mahomes suggest that he misses his previous offensive coordinator:
Bieniemy would need to be fired by the Commanders first. In the event that they part ways with coach Ron Rivera, the Commanders may chose to retain other staff members until the new coach makes the decision on whether to keep him on. Bieniemy would be free to play for any other club in the playoffs if that didn’t happen and he was released of his responsibilities.
Well, why not go back to the Chiefs? Bieniemy offered an accountability that the squad was lacking, according to quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who recently gave an explanation. When Coach Bieniemy was here, Mahomes claimed, “I think he set that standard.”โ
The Commanders are preventing the Kansas City Chiefs from playing.
Bieniemy’s hiring by the Chiefs would depend on the Commanders playing well. Given that Rivera was fired on Monday, Bieniemy must continue to carry out his responsibilities with the Commanders.
Bieniemy won’t be released of his responsibilities in Washington anytime soon, according to Ralph Vacchiano of Fox Sports. Until the organization finds a head of football operations, owner Josh Harris stated on Monday that he intends to keep the Commanders assistant coaches on staff.
Bieniemy’s temporary stay in Washington is entirely justified by the Commanders. Bieniemy may end up receiving an interview for the position of head coach.
The Chiefs will have to wait a few days or maybe a week to see how things play out in Washington. To speed the selection of their next head coach, the Commanders will need to appoint a head of football operations quite soon.
Until then, Bieniemy will not be traveling to Kansas City to play a similar role in the Super Bowl as Vic Fangio did with the Philadelphia Eagles. Moreover, it won’t happen in time for him to significantly impact the Chiefs’ game against the Dolphins.Nagy is going to have to carry the Chiefs for at least another week.
