Cristian Roldan Laments MLS Replacement Referees: Sounders’ Struggles in Draw with Rapids
The Sounders found themselves at a disadvantage in the 57th minute when USMNT prospect Joshua Atencio received a second yellow card, reducing them to 10 men. However, controversy ensued as the card was issued well after the foul occurred, leaving both players and fans bewildered by the referee’s decision.
Atencio, believing he executed a clean tackle, was shocked to receive his marching orders during the subsequent stoppage in play. The Sounders voiced their discontent with the referee’s handling of the situation, further adding to the frustration on the pitch.
As the game progressed, tension reached its peak in the 88th minute when the Rapids managed to equalize late in the match. Chaos ensued when forward Raul Ruidiaz, who had been substituted off, was erroneously shown a red card for alleged misconduct. However, confusion arose when the referee mistakenly brandished the wrong card, leading to a post-game revelation that the yellow card was intended for Sounders’ manager Brian Schmetzer.
In the aftermath of the match, Roldan, serving as the captain of the Sounders, delivered a scathing assessment of the performance of the replacement referees throughout the early stages of the season.
Roldan’s Statement:
“We’d love to have those PSRA officials back, wouldn’t we? We need referees who are familiar with our league. While I can’t delve into specific incidents on the field, overall, the performance of the substitute officials leaves much to be desired.
We understand the complexities surrounding contract negotiations and CBA discussions, but from our perspective, we demand top-quality officiating on the field. The presence of experienced referees would undoubtedly enhance the integrity of the game.”
“It’s frustrating that this situation is out of our control, but we’ll continue to advocate for the return of seasoned referees. Hopefully, a resolution can be reached soon.”
Looking at the broader context, the ongoing lockout of the Professional Soccer Referees Association (PSRA) has resulted in over 260 regular MLS-caliber officials being sidelined. With replacement referees from lower divisions stepping in, MLS matches have witnessed a notable shift in officiating standards, impacting the dynamics of play on the field.
As the season progresses, the Seattle Sounders, despite facing challenges with officiating, remain focused on their upcoming fixture against the San Jose Earthquakes. Meanwhile, uncertainty looms over the return of MLS replacement officials, leaving both players and fans eager for a resolution to the ongoing dispute.
