Ronald Powell, the top-ranked recruit in the contemporary period of Florida Gators recruitment, passed away. His age was thirty-two.Powell led Urban Meyer’s 2010 class, which finished first in the nation, and was the top recruit in the country overall. Later, he played a portion of the 2015 season with the practice squad of the Bucs.
Part of his playing career was defined by what was not. He was the standout player in the U.S. Army Bowl, which was formerly a national high school showcase. He was very successful at Florida, starting 21 games in four seasons. However, he never lived up to the stellar reputation. Powell finished his Gators career with 84 tackles (19 for a loss) and 11 sacks.
The Saints selected the Californian in the fifth round of the 2014 NFL draft (pick number 169). After spending brief time with the Bucs, Bears, and Seahawks, he finished his rookie season with two tackles in 14 games with New Orleans.
The news was released by the NFL Players Association and the Gators on Tuesday, one day after Junior Galette, a former teammate of Powell’s, shared information about Powell’s passing on social media. Powell was described by Galette as a “loving son,” a “respected brother,” and a “EXCELLENT FATHER.”
Powell’s death’s specifics were not immediately known.
