Breaking: Colorado State quarterback commits to transfer to Florida
On Sunday, Clay Millen, the quarterback for Colorado State, declared his intention to move to Florida. Millen’s pledge offers the Gators a seasoned quarterback to occupy backup roles moving forward, with Graham Mertz returning for a second season as Florida’s starting signal-caller in 2024 and freshman DJ Lagway, a consensus five-star recruit, on a developmental fast-track toward playing time.
Originating from Snoqualmie, Washington, Millen, a rising redshirt junior, initially committed with Nevada as a projected three-star talent in the recruiting class of 2021. Prior to the 2022 season, he moved to Colorado State, where he was coached by Jay Norvell. In Millen and Norvell’s debut season, he became the starting quarterback for the Rams, and although Colorado State lost for the sixth time in a row, the signal-caller set an FBS rookie record (per CSU).
In an offense that relied heavily on an ineffective rushing approach, 6-foot-3, 210-pound quarterback Millen passed for 1,910 yards, 10 touchdowns, and six interceptions over the course of ten games. However, Millen was replaced as Colorado State’s starting quarterback in 2023 by Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi after throwing for just 110 yards and one interception in the season’s first game against Washington State. On December 27, 2023, Millen reportedly logged onto the NCAA transfer portal after playing the remainder of the season as the backup quarterback. Along with Lagway, Millen will be a scholarship student at the Gators. Paul Kessler and Aidan Warner, two preferred walk-on transfer passers, will complete the team’s additions at the position this offseason. Going forward, the group of four will consist of Mertz, walk-on redshirt freshman Parker Leise, and the other quarterbacks at Florida.
