The 49ers’ offseason needs shouldn’t alter as a result of Colton McKivitz’s extension.
The majority of the 49ers’ 17 games that McKivitz started were at right tackle, and he performed admirably. While there were certainly ups and downs, he was never at risk of losing his starting position. And it’s kind of an issue.
Although McKivitz was awarded the starting right tackle position last season, San Francisco may have felt he deserved another chance. Real competition never existed. The 49ers now have choices that were unavailable to them the previous season with the addition of another elite tackle via the draft.
First off, the 49ers have genuine depth up front to protect themselves from injuries thanks to the addition of another starting-caliber tackle. As a swing tackle, McKivitz is still an important depth component, even if he is defeated. In the event that he doesn’t, the 49ers have talented potential in reserve.
The 49ers may be able to move McKivitz inside to right guard, where he was anticipated to play when they took him in the fourth round of the 2020 draft, if they add another lineman to the lineup. This is definitely on the table, especially because the 49ers could also use an upgrade at right guard.
Of course, it’s also possible that the 49ers prioritize adaptability above all else and will choose one or two offensive linemen who possess it. In this manner, McKivitz and the new offensive lineman can switch up their roles on the offensive line to see where they work best together.
The 49ers have the option of signing free agents, but considering their cap predicament, it’s unlikely that they will spend a significant sum of money on an offensive lineman they are confident can start for them.
In the end, McKivitz’s contract extension bodes well for his prospects of earning a starting position this season, and his presence gives the 49ers choices and flexibility along their offensive line for the ensuing few seasons.
But they cannot check the offensive line off their offseason to-do list. They still need competition at right tackle and right guard, as well as ideally some better depth to give them more options during the season in case of an injury or subpar performance.
With a strong class of offensive tackles, the 49ers should have no trouble selecting No. 31 overall, which is where they are expected to select this year.
