The All Blacks great makes a significant indictment against Joe Schmidt following the Wallabies’ “kick in the guts” action.
Less than three months after assisting New Zealand in reaching the Rugby World Cup final, the former Ireland manager was selected as Eddie Jones’ successor in January. Schmidt became a significant player when they advanced to the 2023 global showcase after joining Ian Foster’s coaching staff halfway through 2022.

Coles is happy that the 58-year-old has continued to coach, but he is unhappy that he has decided to play for the Wallabies. He said to reporters, “It’s kind of a kick in the guts when you have a guy that is in the all-black environment heading over.”
“However, I would much rather have him coach since he still has a lot to offer and is an excellent coach; it’s encouraging to see him raise his hand.”Australia’s World Cup performance has shown that stronger Australians are needed in international rugby.”That will be amazing if he can pull it off, and I have no doubt he will raise that team to new heights.”
After a dismal run of form, head coach Foster was under intense pressure to turn things around for the All Blacks, and Schmidt took over during this turbulent period. Thus, it is widely acknowledged that the former Irish head honcho had a major influence on improving New Zealand’s situation.
They ultimately lost the World Cup to the Springboks 12-11 in the final, but Coles believed the squad would not have qualified for the tournament if Schmidt hadn’t joined the setup.
“I believe he had a significant impact on our ability to return to an international level in the last few years and to play consistently in those games as well,” he continued. We never would have made it to the finals without him, in my opinion.
“He was a key part of our attack and our fallout. His delivery is so compelling that you don’t want to disappoint him because of how passionate and serious he is when speaking. He calls individuals out and makes you answer to him.
“Coaching with him is a really intense character, and it was probably something we needed when he came in.”He was crucial to our team making it to the World Cup final.
