Rumored Yankees target Blue Jays to be the “Mystery Team” in the sweepstakes
Although Yariel Rodrรญguez was signed by the Blue Jays, other pitchers have also been mentioned as potential candidates.
Even though it seems unlikely that the Blue Jays would make any more significant signings before Opening Day, rumors haven’t ceased. Remarkably, experienced lefty Jordan Montgomery and two-time Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell are still available in free agency.
Snell is still considered a possibility, albeit an improbable one, having been mentioned as a possibility by the New York Yankees on several occasions. It seems that more people are beginning to compete with them for their services.
Although it’s unclear who has contacted him, Agent Scott Boras stated that four mystery teams have inquired in the pair since Spring Training began. Joel Reuter of Bleacher Report made an attempt to project the mystery clubs and suggested the Blue Jays as a contender.
“Alek Manoah went from young ace on the rise in 2022 to a complete non-factor in 2023 when he struggled to a 5.87 ERA in 87.1 innings and was briefly demoted all the way back to rookie ball,” Reuter reported. “The Blue Jays went into spring training with the expectation that Manoah would bounce back and give them a clear road to the No. 5 starting position, but since his spring debut in which he gave up three hits, one walk, and hit three batters in 1.2 innings, he has been battling shoulder tightness.
“Meanwhile, ace Kevin Gausman is dealing with a shoulder issue of his own, and after doing little to bridge the gap in the (American League) East race during the offseason, the Blue Jays could still make a splash before the season starts with a major addition to the rotation.”
Toronto might make sense for Snell or Montgomery because of its abundance of talent. There seems to be a lot of rivalry for Snell’s services if New York hopes to hire him.
