An inquest heard that Manchester United icon Sir Bobby Charlton died after sustaining broken ribs in a tumble at a care home.
According to Cheshire Coroners Court, the 86-year-old lost his balance as he stood up from a chair and collided with a window sill and “possibly a radiator.”
Charlton was examined at the time, and no visible injuries were discovered.
However, the staff eventually discovered edema on his back. The Willows in Knutsford, Cheshire, where he had been receiving respite care since July, was summoned by paramedics.
Charlton had cracked his ribs and was likely to develop pneumonia, according to a chest X-ray and CT scan.
According to the inquiry, doctors agreed that he should be admitted to the hospital for end-of-life treatment.
He died on October 21, 2005, five days after his fall, at the age of 86.
