Dominic Smith, an infielder, and reliever Carl Edwards Jr. are released by the Chicago Cubs.
The 32-year-old Edwards was attempting to re-enter the Cubs organization after making his main league debut in 2015. He pitched for Washington over the previous two years, going 7-6 in 89 appearances with four saves and a 3.07 ERA.
Due to inflammation in his right shoulder, Edwards was placed on the injured list in June and missed the majority of the previous campaign. However, he appeared healthy during spring training, going 7 games with a 1.35 ERA in 6 2/3 innings pitched.
In a career-high 153 games, Smith hit.254 with 12 home runs and 46 RBIs while playing for Washington last season. In nine Cactus League games with Chicago this season, he batted.346 (9 for 26).
There are 34 players left in major league camp for the Cubs: 16 pitchers, 4 catchers, 7 infielders, 6 outfielders, and 1 infielder/outfielder. On Thursday, they travel to Texas for the opening day.
