J.D. Arteaga is leading the Miami Hurricanes baseball team into a new era.
After that, longtime coach Gino DiMare who served as the Hurricanes’ head coach for five of his twenty-four seasons as an assistant coach decided to stand down, signaling to Miami that it was time for changes.
Miami kept its pitching coach, J.D. Arteaga, as head coach this past summer, and elevated him when it came time to select the successor. Arteaga played for Miami and has been a member of the coaching staff for more than 20 years, just like DiMare. Miami lost some considerable potential with DiMare’s departure, as prominent losses through the MLB Draft included Yohandy Morales, Andrew Walters, and C.J. Kayfus.
Coach Arteaga has already made several adjustments to the team’s future procedures since taking over as head coach. One of those was base running, which he mentioned has taken on a lot of importance in their training since they begin each session with base running drills.
In addition, he’s been able to bring on two experts in baseball analytics for the club, Peter Amalbert and Jack Olszewski, something that was previously done by the assistant coaches. Coach Arteaga wants to be at the forefront of the game’s quick evolution. He understands this.
Daniel Cuvet, a rookie who was picked by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 17th round but chose to travel to Miami in order to boost his value, was one of the guys that many people were talking about as ones to watch out for this upcoming season.
As the top overall third baseman in the Class of 2023 (per Perfect Game), Cuvet has the frame to do it at 6-foot 3 and 237 pounds. Coach Arteaga and teammate Doran Gonzalez Jr. lauded Cuvet’s power.
Anticipating a successful inaugural season, Miami will welcome NJIT on February 16 and play at home for almost a month before traveling to Boca Raton, Florida, for a single game against the Florida Atlantic Owls. The Florida Gators and Miami are set to square off in the team’s main encounter from March 1โ3. In the D1Baseball preseason rankings, Miami is not ranked going into the season.
