Mac Jones trade: Patriots’ Bailey Zappe seemingly approves QB going to Jaguars and likes post on social media
When the league posted the news on social media and Zappe liked the post, it seemed as though he supported the trade. In the interim, Jones will now cheer on Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence in his hometown.
Last season, the Patriots went 2-9 with Jones starting. Zappe finally took over as the starting quarterback for the season finale from Jones because of his poor performance. During his last two seasons as a starter, Jones’ record was 8-17.
Reports state that because of how “toxic” the quarterback situation has become in New England, Zappe would examine video in the wide receivers’ room rather than the quarterback room during his first season. Not only was Jones unable to pull together a winning run, but he also had poor communication skills with Bill Belichick, the head coach at the time.
In addition to hiring Jarod Mayo as their head coach, the Patriots will hire a new quarterback. It always seemed more plausible that No. 10 would be dealt shortly after things went south in 2023, even though Mayo had the option to keep Jones and exercise his fifth-year option.
The Patriots do not view Zappe as a long-term starter. He completed 2-4 last season with a 59.9 completion percentage, 1,272 passing yards, six touchdowns, and nine interceptions in his six starts. He will most likely continue as the team’s backup quarterback.
Right now, the Patriots have the third overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. If none of the top two picks are selected, they might use that pick to draft a quarterback. To help with experience, the team can consider adding a seasoned signal-caller with experience, like Baker Mayfield or Joe Flacco.
