David Perron’s two goals in the third quarter help the Detroit Red Wings defeat the Sharks 5-3.
J.T. Compher and Daniel Sprong also scored for Detroit. With six seconds left, Michael Rasmussen added an empty-net goal, and Lucas Raymond had three assists. Alex Lyon made 28 saves. With 11 straight losses to start the season, the NHL’s worst Sharks (9-26-3) were led in scoring by Fabian Zetterlund, Justin Bailey, and Alexander Barabanov. Making 22 saves was Kaapo Kahkonen.
The Red Wings had dropped three straight games and ten of thirteen, but they made a good start to their three-game California tour.Lyon declared, “We’re fighting for our lives.” “Everything seems huge at the moment. Significant road win for us.
Dylan Larkin drove to the net after Perron’s centering feed went off Sharks defenseman Kyle Burroughs’ foot and into the goal with the score tied at three.Perron remarked, “I saw Larks on the backside.” “Obviously, if you watch the skate, I think it’s a good idea to kind of toss it towards the net when there are a few minutes left, and this time it worked in our favor where it hit their skate.”
Perron and his teammates were the team’s main performers, according to Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde.Lalonde remarked, “He was fantastic all night.” “By far, that was our best line. From the first faceoff, he was playing with intensity and in the proper manner. I’m glad he received the game-winning play.
At two going into the third, the teams were even.Midway through the third period, Barabanov gave San Jose a 3-2 lead while scoring his 100th NHL point. He swung around and wristed a shot past Lyon after skating all the way to the goal line. However, minutes later, Perron responded for Detroit on a power play with a one-timer from the left side after Sprong’s pass.
Sharks coach David Quinn stated, “We’ve got to play winning hockey. I’ve said this before: We just completely, at the wrong time, turn it over, fall asleep on the penalty kill.” “We go to sleep knowing exactly what our responsibilities are, as obvious as day. For us, it’s not nearly sixty minutes yet. Yes, it’s a lot better, but I’m over being the same old better. That is unimportant. You desire victory in hockey games, and as of now, we do not.
Six minutes into the second period, Compher gave Detroit the lead 2-1 with a wrist shot that zipped under Kahkonen’s glove and into the goal. With just over a minute remaining in the second, Bailey tipped in a Mario Ferraro point-after attempt for San Jose to respond.
In the opening frame, the two sides also exchanged goals. After winning a faceoff to start the power play, Sprong found space in the slot and scored with a one-timer off a pass from Raymond to give Detroit the lead.
Zetterlund’s eleventh goal of the game late in the frame gave the Sharks a draw. Mikael Granlund’s wrist shot rebounded and Zetterlund poked at it from close range. Lyon was unable to stop Lyon’s puck from trickling in at the crease.
