Despite losing 3-2 in overtime against the Edmonton Oilers, the Detroit Red Wings manage to pick up a point.
The Edmonton Oilers, who came into the game with an eight-game winning run, faced off against the team for the first time this season at Little Caesars Arena on Thursday. Darnell Nurse’s goal in overtime gave the Oilers, led by the quick phenom Connor McDavid, a 3-2 victory against the Wings and snapped their three-game winning run.
In the opening moments of the third period, Andrew Copp scored his first goal since November 7. The Wings were given a man advantage after the Oilers lost their appeal on potential goaltender interference.
When the shutout attempt came to an end halfway through the third period, Lyon had made 36 stops, six of which were against McDavid, as the latter shook off Jeff Petry and Jake Walman to stickhandle the ball into Detroit’s net.
After Olli Määttä pounced on the ball after former Wings goalkeeper Calvin Pickard allowed it to linger just beyond the goal line, Zach Hyman’s goal with six minutes remaining leveled the game.
With 8.9 seconds left, it looked like the Oilers had scored, but officials quickly determined that there had been a clean hand pass.Pickard had 16 saves at the conclusion of regulation, compared to 44 for Lyon.
spirited off
In reference to the Wings’ history of allowing opponents to score on their first opportunities, Derek Lalonde hinted on Wednesday that he could make a lighthearted comment at the pregame meeting.
At least the Oilers didn’t: Lyon turned away Vincent Desharnais’ effort off the first draw. About three minutes in, Christian Fischer was able to test Pickard after McDavid’s first two efforts at shooting were stopped by Jake Walman.
damage mitigation
Approaching 4:35 to go, Ben Chiarot was called for holding Mattias Janmark. Even though Lyon had to face shots from Hyman and McDavid, Andrew Copp and J.T. Compher managed to skate the puck into Edmonton’s zone and waste valuable time.
The Oilers used their man advantage to their advantage and used the last minutes of the game to overwhelm Lyon with eight shots, which was a huge kill for the Wings. The Wings had only five shots on goal after 20 minutes due to their late play in their own zone.
Staying in touch with Connor
The Wings put together a line that included Michael Rasmussen, Copp, and Fischer to oppose McDavid’s line, which included Hyman and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. In the second period, Fischer’s scoring opportunity drew a penalty on Oilers defenseman Brett Kulak, giving the Wings a man advantage for the second time in three minutes. Fischer had a very great game. Additionally, Fischer provided a screen for Copp’s goal.
