Sean Magee is hired as General Manager of Michigan Football by Sherrone Moore
Under Jim Harbaugh, Magee played five seasons at Michigan in a variety of capacities and with a number of significant duties. He returns to U-M under Moore, where he’ll probably be given multiple important responsibilities concerning the football program as a whole. You may read the university’s full press release below.
Sherrone Moore, the head football coach for the J. Ira and Nicki Harris Family, stated on Wednesday, March 6, that Sean Magee has been hired to serve as the general manager of the University of Michigan team. Following his tenure as the Chicago Bears’ chief of staff in 2022 and 2023, Magee is back in Ann Arbor.
Magee will supervise every facet of the player personnel and recruiting departments in his capacity as Senior Associate Athletic Director and General Manager. He will also handle the program’s NIL projects. Along with the head coach and staff, he will be in charge of locating, assessing, and recruiting potential student-athletes. He will also oversee the present student-athlete roster and determine the program’s needs going forward.
As part of his job with the Bears, Magee worked closely with the football operations department, general manager, and head coach to carry out the team’s operational and strategic initiatives. All in-season workouts, games, off-season activities, and post-season staff and player evaluations were planned and overseen by him.
Magee oversaw the distribution and management of several budget categories and served as a crucial counselor for all off-field issues. Furthermore, he served as the administrator of the NFL Bill Walsh Minority Fellowship Program and a member of the club’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Council.
During his initial tenure at Michigan, Magee worked with the football program for five seasons (2017–22). After working as the Director of Player Personnel in his first year with the program, he was elevated to Associate Athletic Director for Football during his last four seasons.
As part of his position with the Wolverines, Magee oversaw and directed the football program’s off-field operations, which included managing the player personnel department, football operations, and the budget for all football-related activities. He also served as a liaison between the senior leadership team and the athletic director. He was also the program’s NFL liaison.Magee worked for five seasons (2012–2016) as the U.S. Naval Academy’s Director of Player Personnel before moving to Ann Arbor. During the most successful five-year period in program history, Magee was instrumental in molding and overseeing the team’s roster when he was at Navy.
In 2004, Magee earned a Bachelor of Science in Economics from the U.S. Naval Academy. Magee played offensive line for the Navy from 2000 to 2003, and in 2003, he led the country in rushing. Magee also played for the program’s first bowl game squad since the 1996 campaign and assisted in leading the Midshipmen to their first Commander in Chief’s Trophy since 1981.
Magee received multiple honors and decorations throughout his tenure as an active-duty navy officer from 2004 to 2012, following his graduation from the academy. Leading a small boat unit in maritime piracy interdiction efforts off the coast of Africa, he deployed to the Arabian Gulf in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom while serving as a Division Officer aboard the USS Juneau in Sasebo, Japan.
Magee additionally worked as the Operations Officer for the Navy Recruiting District in Ohio and as a manpower/personnel analyst in the office of the Commander, Naval Surface Forces, in Coronado, California. Later on, in 2012, he graduated with a Master of Business Administration from the Mason School of Business at the College of William & Mary.
