The top prospect for the Toronto Blue Jays is improving following an early injury scare
Ricky Tiedemann, the top prospect for the Toronto Blue Jays, has started throwing again after being scratched from his first spring start last week. According to Sportsnet’s Hazel Mae on social media:
The franchise has every right to exercise caution with Tiedemann, as he is the top prospect in the organization and the 29th best prospect overall in baseball.
But they also want to watch him grow and play on the mound. This setback is especially distressing because Tiedemann only threw 44 minor league innings in 2023 because of arm issues, and he needs more time on the mound to develop.
Tiedemann is anticipated to make his major league debut this season at some point, even though he will almost certainly begin the season in the minors. Kevin Gausman, Jose Berrios, Chris Bassitt, Alek Manoah, and Yusei Kikuchi are the Jays’ starting five for the season. Yariel Rodriguez is also available, so perhaps Tiedemann can be used as a bullpen arm, but that is still to be determined.
His 82 strikeouts in 44 innings during the previous season are proof that he has excellent swing-and-miss ability. The Blue Jays are coming off a 2023 campaign in which they were swept by the Minnesota Twins in the wild card round of the playoffs and placed third in the American League East.
Bo Bichette and Vlad Guerrero Jr.’s contracts are getting longer, so it seems like the company is trying to make a lot of money this season.
