Report: Kobi Simmons, a guard, signs a 10-day contract with the Toronto Raptors.
As Charania points out, Simmons averaged 15.1 points, 5.6 assists, and 4.2 rebounds per game in his 33 games this season in both the G League’s Showcase Cup and regular season. Should he truly play for the team before his contract expires, Toronto will be his fourth NBA squad. The Raptors won’t need to waive anyone in order to make room for Simmons because there were just 14 players on the team signed to standard agreements.
Now for his previous NBA career. After going undrafted in2017, the Memphis Grizzlies promptly acquired him. He averaged 6.1 points on.423/.282/1.000 shooting splits, 2.1 assists, 1.6 rebounds, and 0.6 steals per game in 32 games (12 starts) with the Grizz in 2017–18. He scored 15.1 points with a slash line of.437/.361/.766 in 26 games for the Memphis Hustle, the Grizzlies’ then-new NBAGL affiliate, along with 3.9 assists, 2.7 rebounds, and one steal per game.
For the 2018–19 season, Simmons then played for the Canton Charge, the G League affiliate of the Cleveland Cavaliers. He averaged 17.2 points on.437/.279/.897 shooting splits, 3.7 boards, 3.5 dimes, and 1.2 swipes in 35 games (34 starts) for the Charge. He played just two minutes in one game during his 10-day stint with Cleveland.
He afterwards signed two two-way contracts with the Charlotte Hornets and played for its Greensboro Swarm. During his second two-way contract with the Hornets, he averaged 5.6 minutes per game while playing in five games. He also played for Polish Basketball League team Stal Ostrów Wielkopolski during the 2021–2022 season in between his stints with Charlotte and Greensboro. Simmons is a fascinating artist. Adding him on a whim is a worthwhile gamble for a Raptors team that, after dealing away star forwards OG Anunoby and Pascal Siakam, appears headed for the lottery this season. Hopefully, it works out well for everyone.
