Trump Appeals Georgia Judge’s Ruling, Seeks Ouster of DA Fani Willis from Election Fraud Case
In a recent development, lawyers representing Donald Trump and his co-defendants filed an emergency appeal against a Georgia judge’s ruling that allowed Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis to continue on the election fraud case against the former president. Trump and his co-defendants argue that the ruling did not go far enough in removing special prosecutor Nathan Wade.
The controversy stems from Willis and Wade’s admission of having an affair. However, they maintain that there was no improper benefit gained from their personal relationship with regards to Wade’s oversight of the election fraud case involving Trump and 14 others accused of conspiring to overturn the 2020 election results in Georgia.
Trump’s lawyer, Steven Sadow, asserts that the defendants are seeking not only the disqualification of Wade but also of Willis and her entire office. This request was initially made in a motion filed with Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee on January 8. The motion set off months of legal arguments and evidentiary hearings that eventually led to McAfee’s ruling on Friday.
The defendants alleged that Willis engaged in a clandestine affair with Wade while also going on romantic vacations together, which created a conflict of interest in her role as district attorney overseeing the case. McAfee allowed Willis to remain involved in the case as long as she removed Wade from his position to avoid any perception of impropriety moving forward.
