Kikuchi, an old friend, greets “Uncle Vogey” warmly as Blue Jays position players report
That was Yusei Kikuchi, the pitcher for the Jays, who became close friends with the rowdy, seasoned designated hunter during their 2019 season as teammates in Seattle.
Kikuchi was quiet and reserved most of the time because he was still getting used to MLB and was new to North American baseball. Now enter Vogelbach, who played a crucial role in assisting the Japanese lefty in overcoming his language barrier and making his welcome. Kikuchi remembered the gesture forever.
After the two became close friends, Yusei and his wife Rumi chose to honor Vogelbach by giving their child the middle name Daniel when Kikuchi’s son Leo was born in July 2019. Actually, when Vogelbach and Kikuchi hugged each other on Monday, those were the first things Vogelbach said to her.
“How is my son doing?” Vogelbach growled.
The huge DH gained the nickname “Uncle Vogey” in the Kikuchi family following the birth of tiny Leo. Kikuchi exclaimed, “I can’t wait to see him,” just before his giant friend showed up on Monday. “He treated me well and is a good guy.”
Kikuchi’s command of the English language has improved to the point that he can have productive and easy-going conversations on a regular basis with the coaching staff and other pitchers. On Monday, Vogelbach noticed the difference right away.
On Monday, position players were mandated to report to the player development facility for medical examinations, making it the busiest day of camp so far. First baseman Vlad Guerrero Jr. was among them, looking fit and slender following a rigorous off-season exercise program.
The Jays’ first full-squad practice is set for Tuesday. The Jays’ Grapefruit League debut is set for Saturday at TD Ballpark against the Philadelphia Phillies.
