Another setback to Wrexham’s promotion prospects gives Rob McElhenney a headache due to a bad habit.
Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s team lost 1-0 on the road at Gillingham on Saturday, which caused them to fall out of the automatic promotion spots in League Two.
The Red Dragons have now lost six of their last eight games in all competitions, dropping them to fourth place in the standings. Paul Mullin, a striker, began today’s match on the substitute bench and has not scored in seven games either.
“I was disappointed to lose the game,” manager Phil Parkinson remarked following Saturday’s defeat to Gillingham. We seemed to have dominance for extended periods. There were enough circumstances when adding extra crosses or items inside and outside the box was necessary.
“We need to find that killing extinct again as a group because we’ve played well the past several weeks. It was a well-executed, restrained performance today. We implemented many of the things we had stated we would like to, but in the end, football is all about having that clinical ruthlessness in the final third. Our display of that today was lacking.”
Parkinson’s team went on a great run to move up to second place in the league after a difficult start to the season. However, recent poor outcomes have damaged confidence.
Both Wrexham and Stockport are having equally poor seasons, yet both teams are still very much in the running for automatic promotion. Wrexham is only two points behind Crewe in third place and four points behind league leaders Mansfield, who are tied with Stockport on 53 points.
But before Parkinson’s team falls any lower on the table, he will want to stop this form. Wrexham still has some distance to cover from today’s winners, but Gillingham, in seventh place, are eight points behind and hold the final playoff slot.
Rob McElhenney, a Hollywood celebrity and co-owner, would not have been unaware of this information. The star of Always Sunny acknowledged that he had a terrible habit of frequently glancing at the league table.
The actor wrote on X earlier in the season, when Wrexham was in second place: “I’m back to just staring at the table again, running scenarios.” I skipped the practice for the entire first half of the season.”
And Ben Foster’s has also acknowledged his diligence. Out of the two Hollywood owners, the former Wrexham goalkeeper disclosed that McElhenney is the one who creates the master plan.
“Rob is the driving force behind it; he’s all in,” Foster remarked. “Don’t get me wrong, they’re both fully in, but Rob, you can tell this is his baby; genuinely, it’s his baby, Wrexham is.”
“I believe Ryan initially just went along for the ride, saying things like, ‘Yeah, I’ll help you out.'” Foster continued, “And then he’s fallen hard for it too.” “He’s a bit more relaxed, whereas Rob is, ‘No, we want to do something here.'”
After winning the National League, Wrexham will obviously be fighting for consecutive automatic promotions, so they won’t want any extra drama during the playoffs.
