Matt Canada, the offensive coordinator for the Pittsburgh Steelers, was relieved of his duties, the team said on Tuesday. Head coach Mike Tomlin issued a brief statement wishing Canada luck in his future coaching aspirations and informing him that he has been removed of his duties.
Josina Anderson of CBS Sports NFL Insider reports that Mike Sullivan, the team’s quarterbacks coach, will call plays, while Eddie Faulkner, the running backs coach, would take over as offensive coordinator.
He was hired by the Steelers on January 15, 2020, to teach quarterbacks. A little over a year later, on January 25, 2021, he was named offensive coordinator, taking Randy Fichtner’s place.
Canada’s teams never amassed more than 400 yards of offense in a game while they were in control. According to CBS Sports, they have been unable to accumulate 400 or more total yards in 58 straight games—the second-longest streak in NFL history.
Additionally, in each of the Steelers’ first ten games, they were outgained. Since 1970, no quarterback with more than 500 attempts has had a lower pass touchdown percentage (1.9%) than quarterback Kenny Pickett. This season, the Steelers have only averaged 16.6 points per game, ranking 28th in the NFL, and 0.7 pass touchdowns per game, ranking 31st.
This statistic from ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Paul Hembekides shows how infrequent midseason coaching changes are for the Steelers: since 1941, the team hasn’t experienced an in-season coaching change until Canada’s firing.
