How Cam Ward’s Position as Quarterback Will Help Miami Hurricanes OC Shannon Dawson
Some will question whether Dawson made the most play calls.Improving your quarterbacking ability usually makes your offensive coordinator appear like a genius. Dawson will have a lot more creative freedom if Cam Ward takes Van Dyke’s place since he has so much more movement.
Colleague Brian Smith assisted me in dissecting how Dawson may gain from having a guy like Ward behind center on my Locked On Canes podcast. Compared to most coaches from the air raid tree, Dawson is more flexible. This week, Brian and I saw that rumors suggest Miami intends to give Ward more pro-style notions.
-Brian notes that Dawson will have additional choices as a play-caller thanks to Ward’s agility and improvisational skills, particularly on third down. “He can call the same basic plays, but (Ward) can do things that other quarterbacks at UM have not been able to do.”
Brian feels that Ward might have been a candidate for the Heisman Trophy last season at Washington if he had Miami’s offensive line.
“Add six more points to every game Miami has,” is how he believes Miami can win two or three more games than they did the previous season, mostly because to Ward’s contributions.
